Canberra is one of Australia's most underrated cities for portrait photography.

While many people think of our nation's capital as a city of politics and landmarks, those of us who live here know it offers so much more. Nestled among rolling hills, native bush-land, lakes, gardens and mountain backdrops, Canberra provides an incredible variety of scenery within a relatively small area.

One of the things I love most about photographing in Canberra is how dramatically the landscape changes throughout the year. Every season brings something unique. Summer offers warm evenings and golden sunsets, autumn showcases some of the country's most spectacular deciduous trees, winter delivers soft light and moody landscapes, and spring breathes new life into the city with blossoms, fresh greenery and vibrant colours.

As a photographer, I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a city where I can move between native bush-land, formal gardens, heritage trees and iconic architecture in a matter of minutes. Whether I'm photographing families, couples, maternity sessions, engagements or personal branding portraits, Canberra's spring landscapes provide endless inspiration.

When it comes to photography, there is certainly no "one-size-fits-all" location. Every client, every family and every story is different, and the perfect backdrop depends on the style and feeling you're hoping to capture.

That said, there are a handful of locations that consistently shine during spring and offer something truly special.

Yarramundi Reach

Yarramunidi Reach
Yarramundi Reach is located in central Canberra, just down from the Arboretum, this wonderful hidden gem is a joy to explore.
Otherwise known as the 'original Arboretum'. It is situated on mostly flat ground making it accessible to most people.

Although it is a big park, there can be some traipsing around so comfortable attire is recommended. It features a beautiful array of trees not too far from one another including natives, conifers, and deciduous trees. It's also a dog park (even off-leash), so it's perfect for families with dogs.

What makes Yarramundi Reach particularly special in spring is the incredible variety of colours and textures available within a relatively compact area. The fresh growth on the trees creates a vibrant backdrop, while the open spaces provide beautiful natural light throughout the day. I love that you can achieve several completely different looks during a single session without needing to move locations. It's ideal for families who want a relaxed, natural feel to their portraits and for children who enjoy having room to run and explore.

Canberra spring photography in the English Garden — 2. English Garden

The Canberra English Garden is also situated on Lake Burley Griffin, this beautiful park is exactly that. A quaint and beautiful English garden. It blooms with blossoms and flowers in spring.
A stunning spot for small weddings and family portraiture. It's also very accessible, fairly flat and easy to navigate.

Spring is when the English Garden truly comes alive. The garden's carefully designed pathways, flowering plants and charming landscape features create a romantic and timeless feel that photographs beautifully. The soft colours and well-maintained surroundings make it particularly suited to maternity sessions, couples and multi-generational family portraits. There is something wonderfully peaceful about this location, especially during the quieter parts of the day when the gardens seem to slow down and simply invite you to enjoy them.

Nara Peace Park

3. Nara Peace Park
The Nara Peace Park is situated within Lenox Gardens and it’s a very popular location. Opposite the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Canberra, it’s famous for its array of stunning cherry blossoms in late August and early spring. You can't wait to shoot if you want to capture this moment. This garden also features traditional Chinese and Japanese structures and architecture.

The cherry blossom season attracts visitors from all over Canberra, and it's easy to understand why. For a few short weeks, the park transforms into one of the most breathtaking spring locations in the city. The delicate pink blossoms create a magical atmosphere that feels almost dreamlike in photographs. Beyond the blossoms themselves, the carefully designed gardens, bridges and water features offer beautiful composition opportunities and add visual interest throughout a portrait session.

Pro tip. It's often very busy on the weekends so I tend to favour the quieter times when shooting here.

4. Dunrossil Drive

Come October, Canberra’s Dunrossil Drive blooms into vibrant green blossom on mature heritage elms (over 100 years old). A super spectacular moment to see, with lots of bonus trees around, from wattle to other blossoms in Spring. I often shoot between the Yarralumbla woolshed and this location as both are fabulous in different ways. Both are Canberra icons, located just moments from one another by car, and both are very easily accessible for people with mobility limitations.

What makes Dunrossil Drive so unique is the grand scale of the landscape. The towering elm canopy creates a sense of depth and elegance that is difficult to find elsewhere in Canberra. Whether you're standing beneath the trees or photographing along the avenue, the results are consistently beautiful. The nearby open spaces and heritage surroundings provide additional variety, making it easy to create a diverse gallery from a single session.

The National Gallery of Australia

5. The National Gallery
Canberra’s National Gallery of Australia comes up on my top five all year round. It's stunning! It is changing throughout the season with the wonderful array of mostly native landscapes surrounding it. This location shines in spring, showcasing an almost bush-like landscape positioned around the various sculptures and architecture.

This is a wonderful location for shoots all day long, so it's great for young kids who need to be captured in the morning before their next nap time when they are generally the happiest. As an additional feature of the beautiful natives in bloom in spring, there is also The James Turrell 'Within Without' Sky-space, which adds a stunning and arty perspective to enjoy and capture.

What I love most about the National Gallery is its versatility. In a single session, you can photograph against native gardens, contemporary architecture, striking sculptures and artistic installations. The combination of natural beauty and modern design creates a truly uniquely Canberra backdrop. It's one of those locations that consistently delivers beautiful results regardless of weather, season or the style of session you're planning. Reliably wonderful!

Why Spring in Canberra is So Special

Spring is a season that seems purpose-built for photography in Canberra. Across the city, gardens burst into colour, native plants begin flowering, and some of our most iconic trees emerge from winter with fresh green growth and blossoms. The weather is typically mild, the light is soft, and families are eager to get outside after the Canberra freeze!

Perhaps what makes Canberra so unique is the balance between its planned urban landscape and its natural environment. Within minutes, you can move from a lakeside garden to native bush-land, from heritage avenues to world-class cultural institutions. Few Australian cities offer such variety in such close proximity.

For photographers, that means endless creative possibilities. For families, couples and individuals, it means there is a perfect backdrop for every story. And for those of us lucky enough to call Canberra home, it's a reminder of just how beautiful this city becomes each spring.
